New TP1 Transformer
New TP1 Transformer standards evolved out of Energy Star Transformer recommended tolerances and NEMA (the National Electrical Manufacturers Association), which developed a voluntary standard, called TP1. This was first released in 1998 and was based on U.S. DOE data which estimated that CO2 emissions could be reduced by 238 metric tons over equipment lifetimes. Energy savings attributable to the New TP1 Transformer efficiency standards were estimated to be $1.39 Billion! By implementing a volunteer standards program among manufacturers, the benefits of upgrading and switching to more efficient transformers could be realized sooner than that required by law. New TP1 Transformers, in order to comply with the recommendations, have to demonstrate efficiencies specified for their own kVA, the lowest of which is 97.18% and go as high, for one model, as 99.49%. Provisions in the program allow NEMA to change the required ratings depending on availability of new advances in manufacturing techniques and changes in marketing factors. The program also defines the testing parameters and procedures to be used to comply with the program for New TP1 Transformers. Current specifications became applicable as of May 1, 2008. It is officially named the NEMA Premium® Efficiency Transformer program. Emphasis was placed on single and three-phase transformers most commonly used in buildings. The basis of this was to meet a goal providing for a three-year simple payback to the customer. Included was both initial and operating costs. NEMA-compliant products can reduce the losses by transformers by about 50%. Therefore, By very nature of the program it is built into it that New TP1 Transformer products will be economically sound investments for the customer! Other programs soon also evolved to forward this effort. One such that backs the New TP1 Transformer designation is the CEE (Consortium for Energy Efficiency) Commercial and Industrial Transformers Initiative of 1997. This effort was within the industry and essentially reemphasizes and reinforces the other two programs. Since these programs are inter-related and were designed to compliment each other, one can usually expect that any product marked as a New TP1 Transformer could be considered to be also Energy Star compliant. All such TEMCo transformer products will demonstrate high efficiencies and extended life due to their quality materials and construction techniques.
