A New Toroidal Transformer can seriously enhance
the efficiency of your existing system or provide many attractive features
to a new electrical device that needs the very attributes one offers.
The core of a New Toroidal Transformer is the
key. The special donut shape is geometrically more symmetrical and
better able to control magnetic flux while also presenting the opportunity
to get more out of fewer windings. Use of solid cores with special
molecularly-aligned properties (grain-oriented silicon steel) contributes
also to the efficiency. Regular transformers depend on laminated cores
to control eddy currents and electromagnetic current to the winding area,
and are not nearly as efficient at this as a New Toroidal Transformer.
Due to their shape, their windings are not as symmetrical and well-aligned,
may have additional air gap issues, and contribute to stray currents and
losses not found in the New Toroidal Transformers.
A New Toroidal Transformer has the following
characteristics as compared with a regular transformer at the same rated
capacity:
-
A donut-shaped core The name
"toroidal" comes from this attribute. The core is the secret to much of
the wonderful efficiency attained by a New Toroidal Transformer.
More will be explained later on this.
-
High efficiency levels About half
the size of other transformers of the same power level.
-
Lower weight
About half that of other similar capacity transformers.
-
Less mechanical hum A highly
desirable characteristic for transformers used in audio equipment or areas
where silence is golden!
-
Lower Exterior magnetic field (EMI, or
Electromagnetic Interference reduced) About ten percent of
normal transformers. Near complete in cancellation of magnetic field
exterior to the coil.
-
Lower leakage inductance As above,
reduced exterior field properties also allows for reduction of inductances
occurring outside the transformer.
-
Lower off-load losses An
attractive feature, and very economical for use in stand-by circuits not
carrying constant work loads.
-
Single-bolt mounting Efficiency of
installation and repair in tight areas for smaller transformers.
-
A choice of shapes
A New Toroidal transformer can be shaped with
cross-sections that are round, rectangular or square. The round,
being more symmetrical, tends to be most efficient in its various
attributes.
-
Better cooling properties Windings
have a proportionally larger surface area from which to radiate heat.
New Toroidal Transformers will therefore maintain a more even, and lower
overall heat.
-
Lower winding resistances Shorter
turn lengths vs. cross-sectional area reduces resistances met in such
designs over other types of transformers.
Note:
There are some characteristics that can result in negative consequences.
There is something called the "Shorted Turn Condition."
Essentially all this is that a conductor passed through the center of the
toroid will cause high circulating currents and high heat. To avoid this
mountings are done with brackets that stand off from the disk or clamp the
disk to the mounting area from the outside.
Another important circumstance is the "Inrush Current
Condition." Due to its highly efficient nature, a New Toroidal
Transformer is more susceptible to this phenomenon. As
magnetization of the core from previous power-ups of the transformer is
overcome at a new power-up, there will tend to be a peak in current
conditions. This can result in interruptions from blown fuses or breakers.
It is recommended that slow-blow fuses or breakers are installed that will
have a rating sufficient to allow for this from the particular New
Toroidal Transformer being installed.
In the past
New Toroidal Transformer windings and
construction tended to be more expensive than regular transformers and
resulted in toroidal transformers being used mainly in a low kVA
range. New advancements in technologies has changed this. To see
if your application can benefit from the many advantages of this type of
transformer, consult with one of our experienced and knowledgeable
representatives!
