New Potential Transformer
A New Potential Transformer is defined as a transformer with a primary winding designed to be connected in parallel with a circuit for the purpose of converting voltage to a consistent value that can be measured or controlled. Very often a New Potential Transformer will be employed when electrical service to industrial sites with higher voltage services must be monitored, but the conventional meters only measure 120v usage. A New Potential Transformer can connect to a Wye system between phase and neutral. It can also be used with a Delta system between phase and phase. Each application demands the correct New Potential Transformer, so selection is critical. In Wye systems the New Potential Transformer rating should be equal to the line-to-neutral voltage or a nearest higher size. For Delta systems line-to-line voltage is the criterion. In all systems, secondary circuit ratings must match, and be able to service the full scale range of the metering equipment. Normally, this would be 120v. Unmatched equipment voltages may lead to incorrect results or damages to monitoring devices. Since New Potential Transformers provide electrical isolation and have the capacity to be used for both step up or step down applications, they are also used for connection of electrical or electronic instrumentation (control Systems) with high-voltage, high-amperage power. It is common practice to protect the New Potential Transformer and the accompanying electrical monitoring or controlling equipment by including a breaker or fuse system just upline from the transformer (before the primary circuit). These may or not be incorporated into the transformer, itself. Use of a New Potential Transformer provides an efficient, inexpensive and safer alternative to arrive at control and monitoring systems. Without access to the relatively inexpensive and uncomplicated New Potential Transformer, creating these control and monitoring systems to match the sometimes very high voltages would open the door to costly designs and need for a greater diversity of more expensive and complex instrumentation. Such an alternative is also complicated by the need for safety shielding and various protections, due to the liability of working directly with potentially unsafe levels of power. Talking with one of our specialists will quickly help you determine the exact application you need and the most efficient use of your resources.
