New Energy Star Transformers arise out of the Energy Star program implemented by the U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Energy in 1992 to encourage energy efficient products and practices in an effort to protect the environment. This, in turn, sprang from the Energy Policy and Conservation act of 1975, passed by the U.S. Congress. This voluntary program was originally designed for computers and monitors; a relatively new product on the market at the time. The program involves the issuance of a special label or tag that encourages manufacturers to meet the requirements for displaying it on their products so they will attract energy-conscious customers. The Energy Star label has been applied to the transformer market. Additionally, the congress passed new minimum federal efficiency standards in 2007 that align with the Energy Star requirements. All New energy Star Transformers can now carry the label and are rated for efficiency, just as has been done with other electrical appliances and products. The label indicates the level of efficiency standards recommended by the Energy Star program have been met by the New Energy Star transformers on which it is displayed.
